🇺🇸 Persian Gulf · The Blockade

Iranian sanctioned tanker Shenlong

USNAVCENT (U.S. Naval Forces Central Command) expanded the Iran naval blockade to a worldwide operation today (April 16). Iranian vessels, OFAC sanctioned ships, and suspected contraband carriers can now be boarded and seized by U.S. forces anywhere. The blockade entered force on April 13 but was limited to the Persian Gulf region until now.

The expansion targets Iran's shadow fleet of more than 570 tankers and puts over $400 million per day in Iranian oil revenue at risk. Nearly 90% of Iran's trade moves by sea. Neutral-flagged vessels tied to Iran or sanctions are also at risk of boarding. The U.S. is invoking belligerent rights, the legal framework that allows wartime interdiction of enemy commerce on the open ocean.

Reuters reported analysts estimate Iran could sustain a halt in oil exports for up to two months before being forced to cut production. The U.S. Treasury separately sanctioned an oil smuggling network run by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, son of the late senior Iranian security official Ali Shamkhani. Satellite imagery today showed oil tanks burning at Sirri Island, a key Iranian oil terminal.

The IEA (International Energy Agency) warned Europe has roughly six weeks of jet fuel remaining. IEA chief Fatih Birol called it the largest energy disruption in decades, warning supply cuts from the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz blockages could force flight cancellations across the continent. The USS Gerald R. Ford has reached 295 days at sea, the longest U.S. carrier deployment since the Cold War.

China is Iran's top oil buyer, with shipments routed through Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia's ship-to-ship transfer hubs. Tankers carrying Iranian crude can now be seized anywhere, not just near Hormuz. Chinese-linked vessels face major insurance and financing risks under the expanded rules.

Iran built a yuan-based oil trade channel with China that becomes irrelevant if the physical shipments can't move. Beijing now faces a choice between continuing purchases and avoiding direct friction with the U.S. Navy.

IRGC's Rezaei: "We Will Sink All U.S. Ships"

Mohsen Rezaei

Mohsen Rezaei, adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and former IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) commander, warned U.S. vessels to stay away from the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran will not concede on its 10 conditions under naval pressure and that he opposes continuing the ceasefire.

"We will sink all ships and let none escape."

— Mohsen Rezaei · IRGC Adviser to Supreme Leader

The IRGC separately stated it can "sink all U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf within range of its missiles." IRGC General Esmail Kowsari said Iran could reroute oil exports through Russia if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, pointing to how Moscow used Iranian channels during the Ukraine war.

The Pakistan Foreign Ministry confirmed no dates have been set for the next round of U.S.-Iran talks. A senior Iranian official told Reuters significant gaps remain on the nuclear issue, the fate of enriched uranium, and the duration of restrictions. An Iranian lawmaker told Iran International there are no hopes for a breakthrough.

Netanyahu and Aoun: The Call Nobody Can Confirm

Lebanon-Israel diplomatic tensions

President Trump posted on Truth Social today: "Trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon. It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow. Nice!"

Official Lebanese sources told Al-Hadath they learned the date of negotiations with Israel from Trump's post. A member of Israel's security cabinet confirmed the call to Army Radio. Al Monitor reported President Aoun canceled his afternoon schedule, indicating the call was expected.

Then Lebanese channel LBCI reported Aoun told Secretary Rubio he will not agree to speak with Netanyahu. Israeli officials told Fox News the direct talks could lead to Lebanon joining the Abraham Accords. The WSJ reported Israel is pushing for a buffer zone and full operational freedom under any Lebanon ceasefire deal.

Iran's Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said a ceasefire in Lebanon is just as important as a ceasefire in Iran. Israeli Minister Ofir Sofer responded: "If we turn residents of the frontline communities into hostages of Hezbollah, we have failed in our mission."

🇺🇸 Pentagon · The Briefing

Hegseth: "We Are Locked and Loaded"

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine briefed from the Pentagon today. Caine confirmed 13 ships have turned around rather than run the blockade. No boarding has been required. U.S. forces outside the Middle East are now pursuing dark fleet vessels in the Pacific.

Hegseth warned Iran's military directly: "We're watching you. This is not a fair fight. You have no defense industry, no ability to replenish your offensive or defensive capabilities." He said Iran is trying to dig out missiles from sites hit in recent strikes. "If Iran chooses poorly, they will face a blockade and bombs dropping on infrastructure, power, and energy."

Cooper said U.S. forces are re-arming during the ceasefire. "There's no military in the world that adjusts like we do." He called Israel "the best teammate" in the operation.

Pentagon Asks Detroit to Build Weapons

Pentagon mobilizes auto industry

The Pentagon asked General Motors and Ford to shift some production capacity toward arms and military supplies, the Wall Street Journal reported. A U.S. KC-135R refueling aircraft returned from Middle East operations this week showing visible wear from more than 270 combat missions during the Iran campaign.

The U.S. Senate voted 40-59 against Sen. Bernie Sanders' measure to block arms sales to Israel. 85% of Senate Democrats voted to block the sales. Republican opposition killed both measures.

Bottom Line

The blockade went global. USNAVCENT can now board Iranian-linked ships anywhere, and Gen. Caine confirmed 13 ships have already turned around. Hegseth warned Iran the U.S. is "locked and loaded" and ready to resume combat. The move puts $400M+/day in Iranian oil revenue at risk and forces China, Iran's biggest oil customer, to choose between discounted crude and U.S. naval confrontations. The IRGC's Rezaei threatened to sink all U.S. ships. Trump announced a Netanyahu-Aoun call that Lebanon denied, confirmed, and denied again. No dates set for the next U.S.-Iran talks.
