🇺🇸 Washington · The Extension

Statement of President Donald J. Trump extending the U.S.-Iran ceasefire

President Trump extended the U.S.-Iran ceasefire indefinitely on Tuesday evening, April 21, at 20:26 UTC, hours before the two-week truce was set to expire on April 22. Trump posted the statement on Truth Social, citing a direct request from Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and calling Iran's government "seriously fractured."

The extension has no expiration date. Trump said the pause holds "until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other," giving Tehran a window to deliver a unified negotiating position. He also directed the U.S. Navy to "continue the Blockade" of Iranian ports, which Iran treats as an act of war. Day 8 of the blockade is now underway.

Vice President Vance's planned April 21 trip to Pakistan for talks was cancelled hours before the extension went public. Sharif thanked Trump publicly on X at 21:18 UTC. Axios reports U.S. officials have told Tehran the window is "days, not weeks."

🇮🇷 Tehran · The Rejection

Iran Has Not Accepted the Extension

No Iranian acceptance has followed the announcement. Iran State TV said the government "does not recognize the extension of the ceasefire announced by Trump" and will act according to its national interests. IRGC-affiliated Tasnim posted that "Iran did not request any ceasefire extension" and "we have not accepted Trump's ceasefire."

Iran's lead negotiator, described in Iranian media as a Ghalibaf adviser, said the extension "lacks logic" and called it a move to buy time for a surprise strike. Another Ghalibaf adviser, Mohammadi, said maintaining the blockade equals continued bombardment and must be answered militarily. He added that the losing side cannot dictate terms.

"Trump's ceasefire extension lacks logic. It is a move to buy time for a surprise strike."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei delivered the softest response at 10:52 UTC on April 22, acknowledging the extension and saying diplomacy remains a tool to secure national interests. Tasnim said Iran's official position will be announced at a later stage.

🇮🇷 Strait of Hormuz · The Ship Attacks

Iran Opens Fire Hours After the Extension

Damaged bridge of a tanker fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz

Less than nine hours after the extension went live, the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) opened fire on at least three commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz. UKMTO (UK Maritime Trade Operations) reported at 05:05 UTC on April 22 that an Iranian gunboat had fired on a tanker, severely damaging the bridge. Crew safe.

By 08:04 UTC, UKMTO reported another cargo ship fired on 8 nautical miles west of Iran and forced to stop. Crew safe, no damage. Ten minutes later, @Osinttechnical reported Iranian forces had attacked two MSC container ships running the strait. One suffered heavy bridge damage. Both stopped off the coast of Iran.

The IRGC Navy Command later claimed it "seized" two of the ships, MSC-FRANCESCA (which the IRGC alleges is linked to Israel) and EPAMINODES, and escorted them into Iranian territorial waters. Iran said the vessels were operating without permits and tampering with navigation systems. UKMTO has logged 35 attacks and suspicious incidents in the Gulf and Hormuz since the war began.

"We will not remain silent. An eye for an eye, an oil tanker for an oil tanker."

🇮🇷 Tehran · The Posture

Missile Parades and an Internet Threat

The IRGC paraded a Khorramshahr ballistic missile through Tehran on the night of April 21 with an image of Qatar's RasGas facility printed on the side as a target. Separate footage showed a Ghadr-110 ballistic missile and launcher moving through Vanak Square in what the IRGC called a "night march." The IRGC Khatam al-Anbiya command said forces are at "100% readiness" and any attack will trigger "a harsher lesson than before."

IRGC-linked Tasnim warned at 11:20 UTC on April 22 that it could cut the underwater internet cables connecting Gulf states to the global network. Iran itself is on day 54 of a full internet blackout, per NetBlocks. At 03:43 UTC on April 22, Trump posted the following on Truth Social:

"Iran is collapsing financially! They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately — Starving for cash! Losing 500 Million Dollars a day. Military and Police complaining that they are not getting paid. SOS!!!"

🇵🇰 Islamabad · The Back Channel

Pakistan Runs the Diplomacy

Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif held meetings on April 22 with foreign and interior ministers to push Tehran back to the table, per Al Jazeera. Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam met with Sharif the same morning. Pakistan's army chief is in direct contact with senior Iranian military officials. Al Arabiya reports Pakistani officials are warning Tehran the window for negotiations is closing.

Bottom Line

Trump extended the ceasefire without lifting the blockade. Iran has not accepted, has seized two ships, has paraded missiles aimed at Qatari gas infrastructure, and has a lead negotiator calling the extension a prelude to a surprise strike. Pakistan is running the diplomacy. The U.S. Navy is running the siege. Day 8.
